VOLPOWER; the role of volunteers in migrant incorporation

Year 2019
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Glasgow Caledonian University leads the EU AMIF (Asylum and Migrant Integration Fund) funded two-year project VOLPOWER: Enhancing Community Building and Social Integration through Dialogue and Collaboration amongst Young Europeans and Third Country Nationals. The project team consists of Professor Umut Korkut as coordinator, and Dr Fiona Reid and Dr Fiona Skillen as Principal Investigators as well as Marcus Nicolson as the Project Manager. GCU leads a consortium composed of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Austrian Academy of Sciences – Institute for Urban and Regional Research, EURAC-Institute for Minority Rights Bolzano, Zavod APIS Slovenia, SOS Malta, and IRMO Croatia. Volpower explores how youth volunteering in sports and arts activities can serve as a mechanism for social integration for youth. Sport and arts activities by their very nature demand high levels of interaction between participants. We believe that this interaction could help to foster, and facilitate community building and mutual understanding. In particular, we will be working with EU Nationals and Third Country Nationals in order to understand the challenges TCN’s face when settling within a new community. We hope that our research will demonstrate the power that volunteering can have in terms of empowering individuals within their local communities. The project will examine these ideas by working with volunteers in sport and arts organisations from across Europe. The main aims of this project are to initiate youth volunteering in sport and arts related activities amongst EU and TCNs in order to explore the effects which volunteering has on an individual’s or communities’ sense of social integration. The specific project objectives are summarised as follows: To increase integration of TCN volunteers into local communities through sport and arts volunteering, exposing TCNs to informal and formal institutions within their localities. To improve partnership between EUN and TCN volunteers through sports and arts volunteering. To provide participants with intercultural skills as well as life and leadership skills.
To generate communication between the local communities and volunteers of TCN and EUN backgrounds. To foreground the value of volunteering for community building through developing partnerships between the sports and arts volunteers and community stakeholders. To foster common grounds and goals for sustainable partnerships through dialogue, collaboration, and resource sharing enhanced by sports and arts volunteering. To assess practices for the inclusion of TCNs at the micro-community level via sports and arts and how participation in these activities forge intercultural dialogue and processes of integration. To introduce digital tools in illustrating good practice in volunteering.

"Globalization, Sports and the Precarity of Masculinity"

Year 2012
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
'In the last few decades, the erosion of the social and economic structures that previously provided a straightforward raison d’être to men have transformed, in all societies of the world, masculinity into a problematic category. In the Global South, deepening economic, political and social insecurities have further compounded the fragility of masculinity. Younger men in particular find it increasingly difficult to secure a productive role in local economies, and many in the world’s more destitute countries are investing their hopes in the possibility of becoming a successful professional athlete. But athletic talent can only translate into economic productivity in the industrial North, and athletic migrations have become, for large number of boys, young men, families, villages, nations and states in the Global South, the solution for a masculinity under threat, the way out of economic precarity, and the embodiment of millenarian hope. At the same time, athletic bodies are inherently fragile, the sports industry fickle, and the paths of migrant athletes strewn with obstacles, rendering deeply problematic yet unavoidable the dependence of so many individuals on the success of a few. This multi-sited comparative ethnographic project seeks to investigate the migratory dynamics at play between selected developing countries and selected countries in the industrial world in three different sports, soccer-football, rugby union, and cricket. It explores ways in which these three sports represent for young talented hopeful in the Global South various embodiments of hope for the redemption of masculinity and of its productive potentials. The research will open new theoretical avenues for an understanding of the constitution of masculinity in the context of globalisation, changes in the structure of nation-states and the meaning of citizenship, and the constitution of everyday lives in more destitute regions of the world.'

Structural Change in the Voluntary Help for Refugees in Sports Clubs

Year 2016
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
"This project is organized within the research intervention cluster „Shifting Solidarities“, which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration and the Federal Chancellery. Calculations on the basis of the Sports Development Report of 2015 and 2016 assume that already in autumn 2015 almost one third of the 91.000 sports clubs in Germany were engaged in the help for refugees. One in five clubs has taken own measures to increase the participation of refugees. These data show not only, that the organized popular sports reacted immediately on changing expectations. In view of the low rate of professionalization in popular sports it is expected that those attainments were also mainly achieved by the voluntary work of club members. Although popular sport is still the sphere of activity with the highest voluntary commitment, the number of volunteers is decreasing. Against this background it is to be clarified in what way and by which strategies sports clubs generate the needed time and knowledge donations of their members to cope with the tasks of the work with refugees. The main thesis is that they use experimental and creative ways and try unconventional strategies to attract new volunteers. Those new strategies will also be conducive for the general search of members in the field of popular sports. The findings in this research project can therefore contribute to the foundation of concepts on “engagement management” in sports clubs."

Migration of footballers against the background of employee migration in the European Union at the beginning of the 21st century.

Year 2013
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The subject of the study are employee migration of athletes, shown on the example of professional footballers. This phenomenon is on the border between research on migration and the sociology of sport. Already in 1987, Bourdieu described the sociology of sport as "doubly discriminated" - on the one hand it is on the margins of mainstream sociology, on the other hand it is underestimated by sports activists who believe that outsiders (in this case sociologists) are not able to fully understand the world of sport. Maguire added a third form of discrimination against this science, which results from its multidisciplinary nature and relatively few publications, which are currently the only measure of productivity (along with the inseparable number of citations and grants associated with them). Considering this, including Dunning and Frederick, cited earlier, research on player migration is still a challenge.

We called workers, but people came who played football. Sport, immigration and integration in France and Western Germany in the long 1960s

Year 2016
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Studies of immigration history as well as sports history have gained a lot of academic prestige in recent years, although they are certainly separated from each other and hardly ever intertwined. For the long 1960s, empirical studies in contemporary history linking the two fields are nearly inexistent, especially when taking transnational aspects into consideration. The project tries to fill this gap and examines the relevance of sports for the integration of southern European immigrants, specifically the role of amateur soccer in France and the Federal Republic of Germany. The analysis will mainly focus on case studies of soccer playing immigrants who either played in already existing German or French club structures or in self organized clubs. Of particular importance will be the experiences they made, the strategies and scopes of action they had in local contexts. For both countries, this perspective allows a critical questioning of the then common thinking in determined patterns of assimilation and integration as well as a questioning of dominant discourses of federations and policy-makers proclaiming sports as the ideal instrument of integration. The project aims at facing such assertions with the concrete cultural contacts and practices of soccer in the 1960s. Taking on a transnational perspective, interests lie in similarities, differences as well as cross-border franco-german interdependencies and especially in the question of whether the athletic team spirit and rivalry and their respective representations raised more analogies than structural divergencies between France and Western Germany in traditions of immigration, in opportunity structures and in framings of political culture might suggest. Another question would be to what extent immigrant soccer can work as a sensor and cipher for the degree of liberalization achieved in both societies during the 1960s. And what roles do debates, controversies and activities dealing with sports and migration play in providing deeper insights into everyday interaction with otherness in times of "Wirtschaftswunder" and "trente glorieuses"?
