Tourism and migration

Travel, tourism and migration are often interlinked. There is a significant overlap in the infrastructure used for the purpose of tourism and that for the  purpose of migration. For instance, travel agencies selling holiday packages, consulates and other institutions issuing visa, shops providing travel equipment and dinghies, websites informing about destinations, financial transaction service providers, bus and train stations, ports and airports, as well as the respective means of transportation themselves, accommodation like hostels, (budget) hotels and holiday apartments and even beaches are often used by tourists and migrants alike.

Where We Fly: Low Cost Carrier Journeys and Locations and their Roles in Promoting European Intercultural Dialogue, Shaping European Representations and Establishing Social Networks

Year 2010
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
This project aims to identify and understand the roles played by Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) in constructing our changing of sense of European social and cultural space and promoting intercultural dialogue in Europe. It seeks to increase knowledge about the new rationales, representations and relations that underlie the increased opportunities and proliferation of routes opened up by LCCs, and to explain their impact on the ways we perceive, communicate and imagine ourselves through origins, journeys and destinations in Europe. In the process, the project considers the identifications and motivations (including both push and pull factors) for LCC travel, be it for leisure (weekend breaks, holidays, visiting friends and family, stag and hen nights, cultural, sporting and sexual tourism) or business (commuting, outsourcing, temporary migration, expansion of markets). Equally, the project is concerned with documenting and analyzing spatial and temporal representations of LCC travel, including journeys and destinations, as evidenced in the promotional material of LCCs (marketing, branding, in-flight magazines, websites) and representations of the companies and the journeys in popular culture (from internet video sharing and social networking sites to instances described in film and text). However, as the 2005 film One Day in Europe suggests by the bi-national cameos it explores, contact between cultures, communities and individuals in Europe, while increasing in volume, is not always marked by greater cultural understanding, and the project is equally concerned with uncovering the new forms of disparity and disadvantage, resentment and prejudice within the borderlands of regional airline Europe.

The role of tourism in multicultural societies

Year 2019
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Tourism and the tourism industry have been criticized for contributing to a uni-dimensional view of culture and people, which (re)produces stereotypic images, discredited histories and romantic fantasies. There is a risk that tourism reduces places to monocultures where the complexity that makes them interesting disappear. No modern society has only a culture, language or identity. Globalization, migration and other intercultural exchanges changes places. Inclusion and participation are increasingly highlighted in tourism and place branding literature. However, tourism and place branding have rarely been associated with concepts such as integration, migration and multiculturalism. TiM's objective is to explore the role of tourism in multicultural societies, in Sweden and beyond, as well as to act for the inclusion and representation of diversity in tourism development and place branding. TiMS’ originality lies in 1. A multidisciplinary and innovative approach to tourism studies, including design, social work, migration studies, marketing and interaction design, placing it in the forefront of technical and methodological development. 2. The ability to reach actual practical and societal change through collaboration between research and practice through action-oriented research. 3. Studies in Sweden and four non-European countries (Kenya, C hina, Japan and the US) broadens and deepens the understanding and conceptualisation of sustainable and inclusive forms of tourism and place branding.

Routes, roots, and rumours: Tracing migration and tourism imaginaries

Year 2008
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The objective of this anthropological research is to study empirically how imaginaries of tourism to and immigration from “the South” (Africa, Latin America, and Asia) are interlinked and what this tells us about multiculturalism and representations of otherness. The main hypothesis is that prevailing images and discourse represent travel to and from the South in ways that seem disconnected from the lived present but connected with an imagined past. This proposition will be analyzed through an in-depth study of how people in Brussels, Belgium, imagine and represent tourism to and migration from Indonesia, Tanzania, and Chile. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, involving observation, interviews, archival research, and the collection of images and discourse from secondary sources (TV, advertising, printed press, digital media, cinema, photography and exhibitions). The ethnographic perspective will provide a close-grained analysis of the cultural practices and social relations that (re)produce globally circulating imaginaries of mobility and the implications this has for people’s lives. The project adds to existing research in two ways. In the study, imaginaries (representational systems that mediate reality and form identities) are operationalized as real practices: through the ethnographic method we can assess how imaginary activities, subjects, and social relations are materialized, enacted, and inculcated. Thematically, the research analyzes how widespread imaginaries and personal imaginations about mobility are interconnected and contradicting each other. The study links strongly between the social sciences and the humanities, drawing on the need to bring together aspects of anthropology, sociology, psychology, history, and geography. This timely project will enable a promising researcher affiliated with a top university in the USA to reintegrate himself in the EU, helping him to expand his academic career and facilitate the transfer of knowledge.
