Inside/Out: using storytelling to understand the politics of exclusion in Europe and South Africa

Year 2018
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Contemporary political narratives in the UK and South Africa are explicitly orientated around ideas about who does, and does not, belong. The UK and South Africa, while different, share trends towards inequality and the othering of migrants as responsible for social problems. Both inside and outside groups express a powerful sense of alienation and hopelessness. This fellowship will use storytelling to generate new bottom-up narratives to challenge dominant top down discursive politics of exclusion. Personal stories will be created by research with people from different communities that are typically positioned as being against one another. These creative, story-based research methods will catalyse public dialogues on the possibilities for new, more inclusive political narratives to build understanding and trust between groups. The fellowship will enable the researcher to strengthen the interdisciplinary basis of her research, by bringing together the disciplines of politics, sociology and psychology. She will also learn from the expertise and networks of Professor Heaven Crawley and colleagues at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR) at Coventry University working on public and political migration narratives in the UK and Europe. This will lead to future research collaborations and career development opportunities at CTPSR. CTPSR will, in turn, benefit from the researcher’s in-depth expertise in the use of storytelling to build dialogue between communities and her knowledge of the ways in which narratives of migration, inclusion and exclusion have developed in South Africa and from her experience globally.

East-Asian Buddhism in Post-Apartheid South Africa

Year 2018
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Explorations of Buddhism in Africa are very few and have been so far conducted at the introductory level. Moreover, in the field of religious studies there is still a marked tendency to reduce the globalization of Buddhism to its worldwide missionary activities, and to neglect crucial factors such as the impact of deterritorialization and hybridization. BUDDHISMAFRICA aims to break new ground in this field of research by approaching these dynamics from an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of religious studies, sociology, anthropology, media studies, African studies, East Asian studies, gender studies, and global studies, as to provide for the first time a comprehensive and detailed analysis of East Asian Buddhism in South Africa, with a focus in the post-apartheid period (1994-present). BUDDHISMAFRICA has three research objectives, which will be pursued through ethnographic (participant observation, in-depth interviews) and archival research: 1) To analyze the trajectory of East Asian Buddhism in South Africa and its hybridization at the organizational/individual level. 2) To investigate the degree in which East Asian Buddhism has been able to reach out to black people, and to provide them with maps to navigate race and cultural identity. 3) To clarify the impact of informal spiritualities related to East Asian Buddhism on the South African religious context. BUDDHISMAFRICA will disseminate the research findings through peer-reviewed open-access publications (two articles and one monograph), an international workshop (and the publication of its proceedings), public talks for non-specialists, and project updates through the traditional/social media. Moreover, BUDDHISMAFRICA has put in place a detailed training program that is aimed, in collaboration with the supervisor/internal advisors and through the participation in dedicated workshops, to develop the applicant’s interdisciplinary, research management, teaching, and interview skills.

From Workers Self-Management to Global Workforce Management: Extended Case Study of the Transnational Steel Company, Arcelor Mittal in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Year 2010
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The project aims to explore the impact of foreign direct investments (FDI) on employment and human resource management practices, new organizational ethnic hierarchies, industrial relations and local communities in different national contexts. The focus is on acquisitions by multinational companies (MNCs) from emerging economies in the post-communist region of former Yugoslavia. The research is situated at the forefront of the research on globalization, migration, global workforce management and the local and transnational challenges to corporate power. An extended case study investigates the acquisition of the Bosnian Steel company by Indian Mittal Steel and its impact on industrial relations, labour standards and management practices, including Indian management relationships with the state, local management, trade unions and local community. The project is developed in collaboration with the Management School, Sheffield University. It also engages Professor Jacklyn Cock, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, planning a joint comparative study of ArcelorMittal in South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
