Internal migration

Internal migration refers to movements of people taking place within the borders of a given state, either by country-nationals or by international migrants. Research in this category includes studies on rural–urban, urban–urban, rural–rural and urban–rural migration, urbanisation, neo-rural trends, gentrification, population de-concentration and turnaround, development policies, urban/rural planning and seasonal migration.

Internal Migration in an International Context

Year 2017
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
This project examines migration motives and socio-demographic characteristics of internal migrants and consequences of internal migration on the regional demographic development. One core aspect is the study of migrations between urban and rural areas and their impact on regional development. The spatial patterns of internal migration in Germany since reunification are analysed by means of population register data. The investigation of educational, occupational and family-related migration motives and socio-demographic characteristics of the migrant population is carried out using the microcensus and panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Furthermore, the age, education and household structure of the internal migration flows and their changes over time are analysed. In addition, the effects of internal migration of special socio-demographic groups on the population development of the in- and out-migration regions are highlighted. The data bases used here are the migration statistics and the microcensus. Furthermore, international comparisons of internal migration patterns and motives are planned.

Impacts of refugee flows to territorial development in Europe

Year 2018
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The so-called migration and refugee crisis is one of the most contentious topics on the EU agenda in the current context. The recent events related to the Syrian civil war, political turmoil in Libya and the subsequent influx of refugees and other migrants towards Europe as well as perceptions caused by internal migration that led to ‘Brexit’ have had a polarsing effect on Europe. Therefore, territorial evidence on the flows of asylum seekers and refugees, their distribution between and within EU countries, regions and cities, impact on socio-economic development as well as information on crisis management and integration is in high demand. The ESPON applied research activity “Impacts of refugee flows to territorial development in Europe” addresses these issues and aims to provide relevant territorial evidence and policy recommendations. The research aims to answer the following questions: How does the distribution of asylum seekers and refugees look like at regional and urban level and how has this been changing over time as a result of European and national policy decisions in recent decades? What skills and qualifications do the refugees possess and how does the influx of refugees impact the recipient countries´ regional and local labour markets and demographic imbalances (especially concerning regions which are facing the challenges of losing population and ageing)? Do the skills and qualifications meet the needs of local labour markets and how do they compete with local population and regular migrants? How are different European regions and cities located in arrival, transit and destination countries responding to the refugee crisis in terms of providing humanitarian aid, services (accommodation, material support, healthcare provision, education, language courses, labour market programmes), community building, internal distribution of refugees and medium and long term integration? How does the diversity within Europe in terms of integration policies at regional and local levels look like? What are the main challenges and what are the good policy responses and the best practices for successful integration of refugees into the local communities, societies and labour markets at regional and local levels? What kind of support do they need? How successful have the integration measures been in the past? How to improve the use of existing funding opportunities? Is there a need to improve the legislation? What kind of impacts would the implementation of the proposal of European relocation scheme generate to European countries regions and cities? How are countries redistributing refugees internally? What are the main concerns for the host countries and communities? West-African Mobilities

Year 2007
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The MOBOUA project has involved 16 researchers in 4 countries of West Africa. It focuses on the act that more migrants seem to move within the regional area than leave it. It is therefore different from other topics strictly related to migrant remittances, or to the xenophobia trend in the current African political context. This project approach enlightens various prospects of the mobility processes, at the international, national and local levels together, and their space-time articulations. Arguments are base on three types of measurements : 1. International movements within West Africa 2. Intra-urban residential and daily movements, extending the migration towards the cities 3. Interactions between the African migrants and other members of the society, either migrant or non-migrant. With this intention, the project has argued that "the South today", knows an increasing diversity. It analysed the mobility and relocation processes of the population by combining methods (biographical and multigenerational investigations following migrants trajectories ; surveys in significant sites whereby economic and social ressources are available for rural and urban dwellers). MOBOUA has thus capitalized a strong methodological investment : "macro" report in international migration ; finer collections of first hand datat (ethnography fieldwork, territorial monitoring of migrants in their urban environment, statistical survey protocole). Four micro-data bases are in the cours of quantitative processing. The scientific results stemming from the project match its initial objectifs on two lines of issues whiche have been discussed during the three MOBOUA workshops : - "To each generation its migrants" : the scope of mobility evolves along the migrants' life cycles, according to the internal and international orientations, and also due to historical circumstances and to the demographic transition that impacts the countries and their population with different rates. - Shifting its theoretical and methosological viewpoint "from migrants to city dwellers", MOBOUA has filled a gap in locally based knowledge. In the city, the articulation of different forms of mobility contributes to family and political re-arrangements. - Beyond the two categories of "settling" and "moving", collective experiences and individualized projects are confronting along meridian circulation roads which have been reactivated between Sahel and the Atlantic Coast. The impact of the economic and political crises in Ivory Coast has been taken into account in this perspective. The curren scientific valorisation involves reporting and sharing the results with urban development actors and stakeholders

Age- and Sex-Specific Migration Patterns in Eastern Germany

Year 2011
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
"Emigration from Eastern to Western Germany dominated internal migration and population development in the years following the Fall of the Wall in 1989. While in the meantime East- to West-migration lost importance small-scale migration within Eastern Germany became more prevalent. Today, this results in an antagonistic regional development especially between rural regions and urban areas with universities. The project aims to analyse internal migration patterns within Eastern Germany. Its main objective is the investigation of age- and sex-specific migration patterns and its influence on regional population development and social structure. Special attention is devoted to the situation of young women in Eastern Germany."
