Researchers' Night in Lithuania 2009

Year 2009
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The main idea of the event is to show that researchers are ordinary people having not ordinary profession – their job is full of excitement, unpredictability and unbelievable discoveries. The event pointed towards natural sciences takes place in 6 rather distant sites including 4 largest cities and covering a wide geographical area of Lithuania. That enables to attract as many participants as possible. The project is polarized towards whole society - all ages, all genders, all nationalities, all ethnic groups - everyone will be welcomed to an amazing world of research and will find that they also can perform experimental research. A lot of different activities are offered for visitors - they will see not only the serious side of natural sciences (astrophysics, Earth science, physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology, biomedicine, agronomy, forestry, environmental research), but also the funny one. The popular lectures and the interactive program “Hands on experiments” in the open research laboratories at 5 universities, 2 research institutes and a high-tech industrial company comprise one part of the event. This action is complemented by the “Amalgam” program comprised of public science show, visiting specialized exhibitions, theater performances, finals of the announced competitions and other diverse activities in four botany gardens (and two museums). Activities of both parts of the event are based on the direct communication and discussions among academic and broad public, involving participants, students and researchers in joint project activities. The young people will be familiarized with researchers by direct communication and by presenting them the selected successful cases of individual research carrier in Lithuania and playing real stories on what the life of researcher is like.

Two Paths of a Shared Past: Memory and Representation of the Nazi Genocide of Roma in Belarus and Lithuania

Year 2018
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
The Romani communities of Belarus and Lithuania experienced World War II and the Nazi persecution in similar ways, such as deportations for forced labour, mass murder in the countryside and survival in Soviet partisan units. Throughout the Soviet era, Roma in the two countries faced the same challenges in their commemoration efforts, being denied a public recognition of their suffering. However, an oral history survey shows that there are also considerable differences between the memories of Belarusian and Lithuanian Roma. While Roma from Belarus emphasize their participation in the Soviet partisan units, describing it in the established Soviet patriotic vocabulary, Lithuanian Roma are more likely to underline their suffering and losses, as well as local complicity in their persecution. Why do the Romani minorities of two neighboring post-Soviet states make sense of their shared past so differently? This study suggests that the key to understanding this phenomenon lies in the socio-political context of memory work. Drawing on the post-Soviet transformations, official memory and minority politics in Belarus and Lithuania, this interdisciplinary research project compares the memory trajectories of Roma in these countries. It pays equal attention to the memories of “ordinary” Roma and Romani activists and the public representation of the Nazi genocide of Roma. Theoretically, this study seeks to understand how the processes of social exclusion and inclusion work at the level of memory and commemoration, and in what ways memory of the bitter past affects the identity of an ethnic group.

Abstract
The project will examine the influence of border security issues on the situation at Russian borders with EU members (Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland) and on the EU-Russian relations on the whole. The author would like to estimate the seriousness of border security challenges (drug-trafficking, illegal migration, smuggling in consumer goods, other kinds of transborder crime etc.) and adequacy of their perceptions by decision-makers and public opinion. The project will be resulted in recommendations aiming to improve EU and Russian border policies in respect to the other sides.

Lost in Mobility? Labour migration from Baltic Lithuania to Sweden

Year 2011
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
This thesis seeks to make both theoretical and empirical contributions to the understanding of intra-EU mobility, with a focus on labour migration from Lithuania to Sweden. The thesis aims to help to explain the dynamics and individual decision-making behind mass labour emigration from the Baltic states, its socioeconomic consequences and policy responses. The dissertation shows that the consequences of the neoliberal policies of the post-communist and post-crisis transformations, together with the construction of formal migration channels after EU accession, constitute various migrant categories. Individual strategies of actively looking for channels to exit and enter, combining them in different ways at various points of the migratory process and establishing informal social networks are re-constituting who can be and who is a migrant. Furthermore, following the economic crisis and austerity measures, the decision to emigrate extends beyond individual survival strategies, instead becoming bound to an individual’s perception of the (ine)quality of life and pursuit of a better quality of life for oneself and one’s family across time and in different places.

Eastern European Borders Annual Risk Analysis (EB-RAN)

Year 2013
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
EB-RAN (Eastern European Borders Risk Analysis Network) statistical data from Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine are available from 2010. The core of the overview are EB-RAN and monthly statistical data of neighbouring FRAN (Frontex Risk Analusis Network) members: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania (only common borders, or borders with the Russian Federation) covering the year previous to the publication. Six key indicators of illegal migration are measured: (1) detections of illegal border-crossing, (2) detections of facilitators, (3) detections of illegal stay, (4) refusals of entry; (5) detections of document fraud and (6) asylum applications. The data in the report are presented in several charts and maps.

PSYcho-Social Support in CRISis Management

Year 2013
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
With the overall objective to improve psycho-social support in crisis management, the proposed project PsyCris (36-months) has the following goals: (1) status quo analysis of psychological and medical support in crises in European countries, (2) improvement of support strategies for victims and crisis managers, (3) enhancement of psycho-medical preparedness for major incidents (contingency planning), (4) development of interventions to deal with stress and reduce stress related disorders of crisis management personnel and authorities, (4) providing efficient self-help strategies to communities affected by crises and (5) investigation of long-term psychosocial, societal and cultural impact of crises. The 11 partners of the consortium comprise research centres, public bodies, small / medium enterprises and stakeholder / end-user organisations from Germany, Spain, Israel, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Austria. As its main product, the project will provide a set of tool kits enabling (1) efficient handling of relevant data, (2) transfer of knowledge and practical competences relevant for crisis management, stress control and social support and (3) rapid decision-making in concrete crises. The tool kits are integrated within a computerised knowledge system combining e-learning and face-to-face teaching. Research and development are based on a multi-disciplinary approach including methods from psychology (e.g. stress management, human resources management, psycho-trauma intervention), education sciences (e.g. knowledge management), informatics (e.g. decision making heuristics), engineering, sociology and health sciences. Current and possible changes in society, health systems and climate as well as cross-cultural and gender aspects are carefully considered. PsyCris will propose guidelines for preparedness, prevention and intervention for crises. The results will have a significant impact on public health, community resilience, international cooperation and cost containment.
