Intergenerational relations of migrants

The intergenerational relations of migrants refers to relationships between older and younger members of the same or multiple ethnic groups. For example, this can include relationships between the first and second generation of migrants.

Studies listed under this topic include literature on intergenerational conflict, transnational families, ethnic language maintenance, segmented assimilation, and parental influences on educational outcomes of their children among migrant populations.

Biographic Consequences of Parent Child-Separation during the Migration Process: The Case of Guest-Worker Migration to Germany

Year 2008
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
"Theoretical background and objectives Research on youth migration in Germany has given little attention to transnational family relations so far. The project explores both the extent and the long-term individual consequences of migration-related family separation during childhood. The first part of the study focuses on guest-workers' immigration strategies in order to explain the development and consequences of transnational family relations in the context of the recruitment of ""gastarbeiter"" in Germany. The study differentiates between guest workers from Southern Europe (Greece, Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia and Portugal) and from Islamic Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia). Survey data are used to construct and describe ""migration chains"" in order to test hypotheses on transnational family relations and the extent of resulting parent-child separation. The analysis of qualitative data gathered from interviews with young migrants living in Germany permits the investigation of the familial decision-making processes concerning migration and the conesquences of separation from parents experienced during childhood. At the second stage, the project also analyses the attachment behaviour of migrants who, in the context of immigration to Germany, temporarily lived in transnational families during their childhood. The idea that a separation from parents experienced during childhood will influence the general attachment behaviour forms the core thesis of attachment theory (Bowlby 1969, Ainsworth 1985a). But instead of concentrating on immediate social consequences of migration-related parental loss on the child-parent-relationship, the study analyses the marital status of adults depending on whether they experienced separation from their parent(s) due to migration during their childhood. Research design, data and methodology Data are analysed descriptively and by means of logistic regression models, using the German Mikrozensus 2005. Additionally, a series of interviews has been conducted with young Moroccan migrants who had been temporarily separated from their parents. Findings The extent of separation experiences differs according to ethnic background. Children with an Islamic Mediterranean background have a significantly higher hazard of experiencing a migration-related separation from one of their parents (mostly, from their father) than those from Southern European countries. A temporary loss of both parents was observed more frequently among young migrants with a European origin. The interviews reveal that it is much more difficult for the children to deal with the absence of both parents. Regression results show that the experience of a separation from parents during childhood significantly reduces the chances of marriage among adult migrants, and that the age at separation plays an important role, while the duration does not show any effects."

Language-Affect Interface in Parent-Infant Communication

Year 2019
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
Language, gesture, and affect are the three musketeers of parent-child interaction. Although affect, our experience with emotions, plays a key role in communication, its developmental trajectory in the beginning of life remains unclear. How do infants develop affect recognition that corresponds to their native environment? How do they perceive affect from non-native cultures? How does language interact with affect perception, and how does infants’ (multi-) linguistic and cultural experience play a role? To further our understanding toward these questions, I propose to experimentally examine infants’ affectual development and its interaction with language in the first year after birth, and specifically, adopting a preferential looking paradigm where infants will watch videos of happy/angry expressions from various cultures along with languages that match or mismatch with the correspondent culture. This exciting project bridges psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic approaches. It discusses three main topics: infant culture-specific affectual development, language-affect interface, and the effect of multilingualism on affectual perception. In this project, I will also investigate the influence of social and linguistic factors on affectual perception, examining whether multilingual heightened sensitivity would extend to the affectual domain. Europe is changing more than ever towards a complex social environment, with interactions between languages and cultures. I hope to enhance European scientific excellence by contributing to a better understanding of infant culture-specific affectual development in various linguistic contexts. As a direct consequence, the outcome of the project may change parental attitude towards a diverse linguistic and cultural environment.

Preschool Education and Educational Careers among Migrant Children

Year 2006
Taxonomy View Taxonomy Associations
Abstract
"The aim of the project ""Preschool Education and Educational Careers among Migrant Children"" (ESKOM) was to analyse the competence development and educational careers of Turkish-origin children and children without migrant background from early childhood (at the age of three) to the transition to secondary school (late fourth grade). About 1,200 families (half of them with a Turkish migrant background) were interviewed in six survey waves. In addition, we carried out standardized tests in various competence domains with their children. Finally, preschools and elementary schools were interviewed via postal survey. Competence discrepancies between children with and without (Turkish) migrant background already exist at the age of three years. In the domains of cognitive and mathematical skills, discrepancies are small; in the domain of German language skills, we find major disadvantages for Turkish-origin children. The developmental progress in cognitive and mathematical skills is similar in both groups. Whereas the initial disadvantage in the domain of German language skills decreases over time, it increases in cultural knowledge. Early childhood German language skills are associated with later school performance and the probability of enrolling to ‘Gymnasium’. Families and preschools are two major developmental contexts for preschool-aged children. Stimulating parent-child activities (such as reading aloud) are positively associated with skill development in all domains. They are less common in Turkish-origin families. The efficiency of such activities for the development of society-specific skills (German language, cultural knowledge) depends on the cultural content of the family learning environment. On average, children of Turkish origin start attending preschools later than autochthonous children, and they are more likely to attend institutions with a higher share of children with a migrant background. A longer preschool attendance duration is positively associated with German language skills of Turkish-origin children from non-German speaking families. Quality characteristics and the ethnic composition of preschools moderate this association. Moreover, quality characteristics of the elementary school are positively associated with the reading achievement of Turkish-origin children in third grade."
